like answerer Jill said, check online for coupons and check in the paper if you get it.
get the cheaper, not that popular name brand stuff.i’m not saying that you have to buy the cheap, bad stuff, just not the most expensive.most “other” brands are less expensive.i think brands like Kraft and stuff like that are just more expensive because they are so popular.
althoug, dont buy the walmart brand milk.it is like the worst milk on the market because it has so many hormones.
by the way, congrats on the baby!
use the circular in the supermarket and bring coupons for discounts when u shop
I try and plan out meals ahead of time. This way when I go to the grocery store I’m not impulsing buying, getting home and still missing ingredients I need to make a meal.
Save.ca for coupons if you live in Canada. Clip coupons from flyers but only buy what you normally would have bought anyway. Saving 50 cents Sunny Delight is pointless if you don’t like it.
Shop alone whenever possible
Make a list and stick to it.
Eat meat less often.
Shop for fresh produce on the side of the road (the little huts that sell what’s in season). Not only will you be supporting local farms but you’ll save money buy not going into a grocery store and being tempted to buy something there you weren’t really looking for. Those places are cheaper than the store anyway, they didn’t ship from California, they came from down the road (which means they’re fresher).
Go shopping at Costco for toiletries, canned goods, flour, rice and pasta, with someone who already has a membership card. Don’t go crazy when you’re in there, be practical. If you eat a lot of canned tomatoes, then buy a case (it’s like getting 3 cans free), but unless you’re going to go through a 1L jar of sundried tomatoes packed in oil then they’re best left on the shelf. (I’ve had a huge jar of marachino cherries in my fridge for the last 2 years, no idea if they’re still good, lol)
When harvesting season approaches, you can go apple picking and make apple sauce, then freeze it in Gladware. You can use it in baking instead of oil, or it’s good on toast for breakfast (bake some raisin bread…mmm) or in a bowl as a snack.
10lb bags of potatoes used to be $ 1. Now they’re $ 3, on sale. If you see a bag of 50 lbs for $ 5-10, ask some friends or family to go in with you on it. Split the cost and potatoes, you’ll save money. Same applies for onions and carrots.
Look low in the grocery store. The cheapest items are placed on shelves nearest to the floor. Buy store brands, most are the same quality as the national brands and some are even made by them. They all have a money back guarantee if you don’t like them or aren’t satisfied.
Buy in bulk. Check the per unit prices though because that tells you how much you are paying per ounce, per pound, per serving and you can compare prices between products more accurately.
Morph Meals. I got this one from Robin Miller on HGTV and it really saves money. Use the main ingredients from one meal to make another later in the week. For example, roast a chicken on Monday with veggies and a salad. Use the leftovers on Wednesday for chicken alfredo and the later again, use the bones and dark meat with some veggies and pasta to make soup. I try to get at least 2-3 meals out of the main ingredients to make others.
Buy seasonally and locally. Produce that is in season is usually on sale and cheaper if it is produced locally because transportation costs are not added in. I grow as much as I can in my own home garden and freeze over production. I also started an exchange with my neighbors so that when they have excess they trade me theirs for mine.
Watch the circulars from all of the stores. I know people say watch the dollars and the pennies take care of themselves. But I find those pennies really add up over many products. Sometimes, it is cheaper to go to 3 different stores on an efficiently planned route to hit their sales because one may be having a sale on meat that is cheaper than everyone else, another may have a 10/$ 10 sale (10 pounds of different selections of produce for 10 bucks) and still another has 4/$ 1 canned items. Last month alone, I saved around $ 80 by going to 3 different stores hitting their sales.
Make it yourself. Buy fewer prepared foods and make the meal yourself. Not only are you controlling sodium, chloresterol, transfats, food additives, etc. but it saves you big time. Instead of buying that lasagne already frozen and ready to heat up, take the time to make it yourself for a fraction of the cost. Take a look at the Food Network recipe files because they have many recipes for meals that seem all involved that can be made in much less time but are flavorful and better for you than the prepared store bought products.
Congrats on the new baby. Consider making your own pureed food when your child starts eating “real foods”.
I go to the 1.00$ store for practically all my hygiene and household needs toothpaste deoderant garbage bags dish soap bar soap ectect. Then I go to Audi’s they have practically everything for wholsale prices.
They say at Audi’s the average family your size saves 115$ a month
If you have one around you check it out! You wont be dissapointed and sometimes they carry brand name things.Thier food is just as good as brand name stuff.
We went from 70-80$ – a week to $ 40-60 a week that really does add up.Audi’s have said they will NOT raise thier prices because of the gas crunch either.
If you dont have an Audi’s near you most 1$ stores carry all your household things and food like canned goods ect.as well. sometimes my store has 2 cans for a 1.00$
Last week i spent abut $ 55.00. I got 15 cent kiwi fruits I could not beleive how cheap they where. Thier prices are low but they will mark them even lower jjust to get rid of them.
