Tesco Win Green Retailer of the Year

Tesco, the leading retailer in the United Kingdom in beers, wines and spirits, won the retailer’s green year Green Drinks Business Awards held at the end of March.

Tesco has won the award following a number of measures taken by the retailer to make its packaging for alcoholic beverages as environmentally friendly as possible.

Tesco currently has 461 projects to reduce packaging in beers, wines (http://www.tesco.com/wine/) and spirits. Until now, the retailer has to have delivered 24,047 metric tonnes of packaging reduction with another BWS 8000 MT for delivery in the next 6 months. Tesco has also led to the development of wines in Tetra Pak to increase their acceptability in the UK market. Tetra Pak has 75% of cardboard, a material low carbon materials they work to have 100% certified, currently by the FSC. In an effort to expand its knowledge to its customers, Tesco puts additional levels of information on labels of wine bottles to return. These include information on packaging reduction, elimination (recycling), the proportion of recycled materials and carbon footprint. Tesco outlets in its stores to encourage people to consider green options when shopping.
