America Speaks Out: protecting our public lands

Today the President announced a new community-driven conservation and recreation agenda for the country, encapsulated in a report entitled “America’s Great Outdoors.”

John Kostyack, vice president of the Wildlife Conservation National Wildlife Federation said this about the report:

“At the same time, the House of Representatives mounted a sneak attack on the conservation through the budget process, America’s Great Outdoors initiative directs us in the opposite direction. It confirms what most Americans already know :. We can not afford to lose our endangered spaces and natural ecosystems

“National Wildlife Federation strongly supports the report’s call for full funding of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which takes a small portion of oil revenues offshore to gain places for the open space, wildlife habitat and recreation. The LWCF is a necessary tool to provide areas for children and families to connect to the outside by creating new parks, trails, wildlife refuges, and more.

“The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a priority for the Americas Initiative Great Outdoor dependent on Congress to take action through the budget process and appropriations. Congress must act now to seize this opportunity investment. The preservation of open spaces and ecosystems is a healthy way to feed the children, some have lost their connection with nature. At the same time, the protection of nature in our world will give us, as well as future generations, millions of jobs, outdoor recreation, places of fishing and hunting, the populations of diverse wildlife, clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.

“When large, diverse districts rose to the listening sessions, met with representatives of several government agencies, and called and wrote their representatives in Congress, their main theme was that America has precious landscapes must be supported so that wildlife can thrive and future generations to enjoy as we do today.

that Congress and the President of the debate on the budgets, they must answer the call of the nation for making conservation a priority in implementing the recommendations contained in the report Great Outdoors. We can not undermine the commitment of our country to clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat, healthy, and green spaces for children and families to connect to nature.

“With fish and wildlife in decline in many parts of the country because of compromise and reduce habitat and rapidly growing impacts of climate change, this timely report focuses our attention on the need continue to preserve open spaces, home to many iconic fish species of wildlife. If we do conservation investments today, we risk losing our natural heritage forever. “
