Gables Residential receives 2009 Environment Prize

Gables Residential (http://www.gables.com) recently received the 2009 Prize for the Environment Green Building in multifamily category by the Association of Maryland National Capital Building Industry (MNCBIA). The award recognizes Gables Residential for exemplary environmental stewardship in developing Gables Takoma Park, a 145-unit infill community environmentally conscious Takoma Park, Washington, DC.
“We are honored to be recognized by Gables Takoma Park MNCBIA our environmental efforts,” said Jorgen Punda, Regional Vice President, Investments of Gables Residential. “Special attention and planning went into developing this project, which allowed us to achieve a LEED NC Silver certification. Our team of consultants and subcontractors have helped make this project a success.”
According
MNCBIA, the judges awarded Gables Residential and Gables Takoma Park in the 2009 Environmental Award for its progressive example of life-friendly environment and the number of green features. Over 30 percent of project materials were extracted, processed and manufactured locally and regionally. The project also uses construction products, including recycled content. The landscaping consists of native plants and a system of drip irrigation minimizes water consumption. The building itself has a rooftop solar reflective, energy efficient lighting and Energy Star appliances, low-flow fixtures and three separate drops recycling bin in the bathroom. The consulting engineer for the environment was GreenShape, LLC.
MNCBIA Environment Awards showcases builders and developers in Maryland and Washington DC that meet a wide range of environmental regulations on open space, water runoff, protecting trees, sediment control and stormwater management at the local, state and federal levels. Many industry members are given more to preserve, strengthen and protect the environment and the environmental price MNCBIA recognize and honor the outstanding commitment.
