Contractor reports on the Chicago Green Moving Company
Chicago (PRWEB) September 30, 2008
International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) has published in the September / October 2008 Facility Management Journal, a timely and significant article entitled – “The office Green Move “. Written by David L. King, AIA, CFM, president of Samson Carts ® and CrateXpress ®, addresses this important environmental study in detail the ecological impact of an activity occurs regularly – switching to a new office or home.
In his study, King states that a conventional engine using wooden carts will purchase five wooden carriages per year. Based on a report by the U.S. Census there are 13,000 moving companies in the United States, which equates to an estimated 85,000 wooden carts bought each year. Each basket made from 2.5 feet of plywood, this translates into a loss of 8,667 trees per year. The annual loss of this precious dwindling resource, then adds an additional 3,033.45 tons of CO2 into our atmosphere.
King also points
environmental impact of using cardboard boxes to move homes and businesses. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approximates that cardboard is perhaps the largest single component of municipal solid waste. It is estimated that 30.2 tons of cardboard waste was generated in 2000, representing 13% of municipal waste in the nation of solid waste.
King cites additional environmental costs in his article and provides a practical solution to this growing problem of the environment. According to King, “There are viable alternatives to using cardboard boxes and plywood carts. There are sustainable plastic carts and lightweight plastic boxes that reduce waste and are recyclable. In addition, the manufacture of these products is energy efficient and emits significantly less air pollutants than the manufacture of laminated plywood carts cons. “
